Coastal’s Owings nets BSC award for beating ACC foes

ccubase-owingsthrowCoastal Carolina junior Connor Owings (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert HS) was named the Big South Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week, and he arguably should have been won the Atlantic Coast Conference award as well.

Owings led the Chanticleers to a 4-1 record, including wins over ACC powerhouse programs Georgia Tech and North Carolina State, as well as Canisius and Albany. The second baseman posted an impressive .533 (8-for-15) batting average with nine RBI. He had at least one RBI, one stolen base and two hits in four of the five games, including a pair of doubles and two home runs, for a slugging percentage of 1.000 for the week. Overall, he accounted for 11 of CCU’s 47 runs scored this past week and recorded an on-base percentage of .600.

Owings was 2-for-4 with three RBI in the Canisius win Monday, 2-for-3 with 3 RBI in the loss Tuesday, 2-for-3 with 2 RBI versus Albany and 2-for-3 with two runs scored versus NC State. While Owings did go 0-for-2 in the Georgia Tech win, he had an RBI in the game and drew a walk.

With that, in addition to collecting two hits in subsequent games versus Albany and NC State, Owings has reached base safely (walk/hit/hit by pitch) in 29 consecutive games dating back to last season (22 straight games to end 2014 and all seven games this season). His streak is tied for seventh on the active list nationally. Ironically, the NCAA leader in the category will be in Springs Brooks Stadium this weekend as Ball State’s Alex Call with a 47 consecutive-game streak will be at Coastal for the Chanticleer Classic.

This is Owings’ first career Big South weekly honor and the first for a Chanticleer offensively since Jacob May was honored on May 6, 2013. (Note: Austin Kerr was the back-to-back Big South Pitcher of the Week last season after throwing consecutive complete-game shutouts.)

Coastal Carolina will host yet another impressive field at this weekend’s Chanticleer Classic. The group includes #26 Illinois, West Virginia, Kent State and Ball State.
