Coastal’s Quolas flirts with no-hitter in win over WCU

Kiana Quolas took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and notched her second complete-game shutout in three starts Sunday afternoon as the Coastal Carolina softball team blanked Western Carolina 4-0 in the finale of the Coastal Carolina Invitational.

Quolas (5-4) won her fourth straight decision and has gone 23 innings without allowing a run. The lone hit Western recorded was an infield single to lead off the seventh inning. The sophomore got the next three outs to record her second career one-hitter. She struck out six and didn’t allow a walk. The only other Catamount baserunner reached on an error in the second inning.

The Chanticleers (9-10) scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Paige Goldsack and Sara Rasley started the frame with singles to center.  After a sacrifice bunt by Nicole Saggiomo moved the runners to second and third, Brooke Donovan sent a grounder to second and pinchrunner Maicie Hahn beat the throw home to plate the first run. Donovan then stole second and Rasley scored on a wild pitch. Quolas then made it 3-0 with an RBI double down the left-field line and Kory Hayden added an RBI single to left. Hayden and Goldsack each went 2-for-3 at the plate, with Goldsack recording her first career multi-hit game.

Quolas didn’t allow any ball to reach the outfield in fair territory off of a Catamount bat. In addition to the six strikeouts, she recorded 13 groundouts, with the other two outs coming on a lineout and a popout to second base. Western center fielder Jordan Fulton just beat out a slow roller to second base to spoil the no-hit bid. Quolas’ other one-hit performance came against UNC Wilmington last April.

Coastal returns to action Thursday when it hosts Georgetown at 2 p.m. in the opening game of the Chanticleer Challenge. The Chanticleers will then play two more games in the tournament on both Saturday and Sunday.
