Coastal’s Ribeiro, Portillo, Uzo named All-Americans

ccusoccer-portilloPostseason awards continue to accumulate for the members of the Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team. The latest awards are All-American honors for seniors Pedro Ribeiro and Justin Portillo along with junior Uchenna Uzo.

Ribeiro was named a first team All-American by College Soccer News and second team by Soccer America, while Portillo and Uzo garnered Scholar All-American plaudits from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Ribeiro, who was named a second team All-American by the NSCAA earlier in the month, concluded his senior campaign with 11 goals and seven assists. He was also tabbed to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region first team and Big South Tournament MVP. The Brazilian finished his Coastal Carolina career ranked 11th all-time with 31 goals, tied for sixth with 26 assists, ninth with 88 points (31g, 26a) and second with 249 shot attempts. He also ranks second in the CCU record book with 86 career matches played and tied for eighth with 74 appearances in the starting XI. He led the Chanticleers to four NCAA Tournament appearances, five NCAA Tournament wins, three Big South regular season championships and two Big South tournament championships. Moreover, he became just the third Chanticleer to be named a semifinalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy.

Portillo, a recreation and sport management major with a 3.37 grade point average, picked up first team Scholar All-American honors after earning a second team nod a season ago. The midfielder closed the season with a team-high nine assists, ranking 15th in the NCAA. He concluded his Chanticleer career as CCU’s all-time leader in matches played with 89 and matches started with 87. In addition, Portillo ranks sixth in the CCU record book with 29 assists. He led Coastal Carolina to a 69-20-4 overall record and was also instrumental in directing the Chants to the NCAA team scoring title in 2011 and a second-best showing in goals in both 2012 and 2013.

Uzo earned second team Scholar All-American honors with a 3.36 grade point average as an economics major. With Uzo, a second team All-Big South and NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region selection, patrolling the backline the 2013 Chanticleers ranked 11th-best in the nation with a .500 shutout percentage and 34th with a 0.83 goals against average. He helped the CCU defensive unit limit opponents to a mere 20 goal in 24 matches, including only five in 10 Big South Conference matches. The Lagos, Nigeria, native also finished the year with an assist and nine shot attempts.

Ribeiro, Portillo and Uzo and others announced as NSCAA award winners will be recognized Saturday, Jan. 18 at the annual All-America Luncheon, held in conjunction with the 2014 NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia.
