Coastal’s Ross, Catron net Big South weekly awards

ccufoot-alex ross at gwu 2 (2)Quarterback Alex Ross and, for the second consecutive week, placekicker Alex Catron were honored by the Big South as No. 2 Coastal Carolina handed Gardner-Webb a 38-14 loss this past Saturday. Ross, for the second time this season, was tabbed the league’s Choice Hotels Offensive Player of the Week while Catron earned Special Teams Player of the Week.

Ross was 29-of-43 passing (67.1 percent) for a career-high 351 yards with two touchdowns in leading Coastal Carolina to a 38-14 win at Gardner-Webb. His 29 completions were his second-most in a game, and 18 went for first downs. He also extended his multi-TD pass streak to five. Ross was 7-of-10 for 85 yards in the first quarter and 20-of-28 for 238 yards in the first half as CCU built a 28-14 lead.  After being shut out in the third quarter, Ross led CCU to a 12-play, 77-yard TD drive to go up 35-14, by going 5-of-8 with a 22-yard TD pass. He finished the day with 366 yards of total offense, his fifth 300-yard game of the season and 10th of his career.

Ross was additionally tabbed Big South Offensive Player of the Week in leading Coastal to a victory over Elon. From Elon through Gardner-Webb – a five-game span – Ross has completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,428 yards with 12 touchdowns – adding two rushing scores – and one interception while averaging 340.4 yards of total offense.

Catron finished with 12 points on 3-of-3 field goals and 3-of-3 PATs at Gardner-Webb. He made field goals from 20, 34 and a school-record 53 yards. GWU entered the game 14th in in the nation kickoff returns with average of 23.81 yards per return and J.J. Hubbard was 19th in the FCS (25.9 avg.). However, GWU only averaged 17.8 yards per return on five Catron kickoffs while adding two touchbacks.
