Cole scores career-high 20 as Coastal falls to High Point

The Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team’s upset bid at High Point fell short as the Panthers finished the game on a 13-2 run to pull away from the Chanticleers and secure the 80-65 win.

The loss drops Coastal to 10-6 (3-4 Big South) on the season as High Point improves to 11-6 overall and a perfect 6-0 in conference with the victory.

Freshman guard Shatia Cole poured in a career-high and Chanticleer season-high 20 points on 9-of-15 from the field in addition to her five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore Kayla Cook was the Chants second leading scorer with 14 points and a career-best three 3-pointers.

High Point’s Erin Reynolds paced all scorers with 25 points. In addition to Reynolds double-digit performance, three other Panthers score 10-plus points, including Cheyenne Parker’s 14 points to go along with a career-high 22 rebounds.

Coastal trailed by 16 after the first minute of play in the second half before methodically cutting the Panthers’ lead to 10 over the next 6:44. After a Parker layup put High Point back in front by 12, AJ Jordan and Cook sank back-to-back jumpers to reduce the deficit to eight at 61-53 with 9:36 remaining in regulation.

The Panthers pushed their lead back to 10 on a pair of Parker free throws after the squads exchanged baskets over the previous three minutes. Alexx Puckett then converted a layup in the paint followed by a steal on the defensive end that she fed ahead to a streaking Cole who made the fast break layup to cut the High Point lead to six. A missed layup by High Point’s Reynolds and a defensive board by Cook let Cole score another layup to bring Coastal within four at 67-63 with 4:18 to play.

The Chants would come no closer as High Point put together a 13-2 run, aided by four Coastal turnovers, to secure the game.

The Chants jumped out to an early 10-7 lead on the homestanding Panthers through the first six minutes of action thanks in large part to triples by Cole and Kira Carter.

However, Coastal would go cold from the field over the ensuing seven minutes as High Point went on an 22-2 run to take a 29-14 lead with 8:14 to play before the intermission. The teams exchanged baskets for the next several possessions, but High Point was able to find its way to the free throw line as the half wore on to extend its lead out to as many as 17 points.

Cook scored the Chants final 10 points of the half as she sank a trio of 3-pointers, including a heave from nearly 30 feet as time expired in the half, to close the Panthers’ lead to 44-31.

Coastal shot 37.9 percent (25-of-66) from the field and held a 26-6 advantage in bench points, but High Point countered with a 44.8 shooting percentage (30-of-67) and a 23-12 edge in points off turnovers.

Coastal Carolina continues its road trip at renewed Big South member Campbell on Monday, Jan. 23. Tipoff from the Fighting Camels’ Gore Arena is set for 7 p.m.
