Conway ace Holmes named SC Gatorade Player of Year

conbase-holmes3Conway High senior right-hander Grant Holmes has been named the 2013-14 Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year for South Carolina.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound commitment to the University of Florida captured the honor following another stellar season on the mound for the Tigers. Although his team failed to make the playoffs, Holmes was dominant in his appearances, posting a 4-1 record and an 0.35 ERA while striking out 82 batters in 40 innings of work.

According to the press release, the award “recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.” Holmes boasts a 3.36 GPA and belongs to the National Honor Society, as well as volunteering his time as a youth baseball coach.

The press release quoted Myrtle Beach High coach Tim Christy, who had high praise for his team’s rival. “In my 25 years of coaching, have only seen one other high school pitcher be as dominant as Grant Holmes and that was (Detroit Tigers’ ace) Justin Verlander,” he said. “Holmes carries himself with class and has a demeanor that is not polluted with arrogance and self-promotion. If there is a better player in our state, I don’t know who it would be.”

Holmes, who is ranked among the nation’s top five prospects on most major scouting services, has signed with the Gators but will have a big decision to make in next month’s Major League Baseball Draft, where he is projected to be a high first-round selection.

Holmes is the second Gatorade Player of the Year from Conway High. Pitcher Forrest Beverly won the honor in 2001 before going to South Carolina. Holmes’ elder brother,  Colby, also played four seasons for the Gamecocks (2010-13).
