Conway freshmen duo leads local pack at state XC meet

conxc-smithA pair of Conway High freshmen led all local finishers at Saturday’s state championship cross country meet at the Sandhills Research Center in Columbia.

The Myrtle Beach boys placed 14th as a team and the Lady Seahawks finished 19th, followed by the St. James girls in 20th. No other local teams cracked the top 20.

In Class 4A girls, Conway freshman Kenia Smith posted an eighth-place finish with a time of 18:52.03. Socastee’s top finisher was Sommer El-Khatib in 75th (20:43.09).

In Clas 4A boys, Conway freshman Shane Moody was the top local finisher in 58th place (16:53.53). Carolina Forest’s Michael Pieterse placed 71st (17:04.05).

In Class 3A girls, top local finishers for each school were St. James’ Kelsey Glover in 31st (20:30.10), North Myrtle Beach’s Wilson Jenerette in 39th (20:48.67), and Myrtle Beach’s Kailey Flannelley in 60th (21:29.66).

In Class 3A boys, Myrtle Beach’s Ethan Epstein placed 44th (17.:18.68), just ahead of St. James’ top finisher Nolan Fuss in 45th (17:19:54).
