Countdown to Kickoff 2012: Braves to add more options

Socastee’s triple-option offense could look more like a quadruple option in 2012.

With junior Hunter Renfrow taking over for big brother Jordan this season, look for the Braves to throw the ball more than the past decade since father Tim took over as head coach.

While Socastee won’t suddenly become the Air Braves by any means, the combination of Hunter’s strong arm and the team’s huge turnover on the offensive line may leave the Braves with no other option but the pass.

“We lost our offensive line so we’re going to have a lot of young guys running the triple option, but we hope to improve,” Socastee coach Tim Renfrow said. “With Hunter at quarterback and some experience at the skill positions, we should be OK.”

Running the triple option effectively requires discipline, mastering blocking schemes and precision. Until the new group up front acquires those attributes, look for Hunter to use the pass to keep opposing defenses honest.

Hunter Renfrow will actually have more than three options. With veteran running back Daquon Brown and Adam Crane joining newcomers Delano Walters and Austin Stanley, he will be able to hand off or employ the keeper on any given play. But he will also have options down the field if given the time and pass protection he needs.

Socastee lost seven starters on offense and six on defense, which will be the key for keeping the Braves in close games. Defensive end bookends Dakota Morgan and Crane will be critical in maintaining containment against speedier opposing offenses.

Last year the 5-7 Braves lost four games by less than a touchdown, so slight improvement could mean a big boost in wins. And after Hunter took over for the injured Jordan at the end of 2011, the Braves rolled up 97 points in two games – a nice omen for this season if they can keep it going.

But to get there, Socastee’s ground-pounding attack may have to add some air time to keep opposing defenses at bay. Look for the Braves to have some new success with the pass to help get the running game rolling.
