Dash shuts out Pelicans, spoils return for Heesch

In his first start in nearly two years, left-hander Michael Heesch fired five shutout innings for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, but the Winston-Salem Dash rallied for a 5-0 win at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark on Wednesday.

Heesch took no decision in his first start with the club, striking out three while scattering four hits.

With the contest scoreless into the top of the ninth, reliever James Pugliese took over on the mound and alternated a pair of walks and a pair of strikeouts. With two outs, the Dash (38-45, 8-5 second half) tipped the scales and pounced for five runs on five consecutive singles to grab a 5-0 lead. Right-hander James Farris relieved Pugliese and allowed the fifth run on a single to right field, but he struck out catcher Omar Narvaez to finish the half-inning.

Myrtle Beach (46-37, 5-9 second half) was held off the base paths against Dash starter Robinson Leyer, who began his outing with four perfect innings. Jacob Rogers tallied one of the Pelicans two base hits on the evening with a lead-off double to open the fifth inning, and after moving to third on a ground out, he was stranded there as Leyer retired the side.

With a bunt single up the third base line in the sixth inning, Trey Martin was the only other Pelicans baserunner of the night.

Heesch fanned three batters and did not allow a walk in his five innings of work on Wednesday. Hard-throwing right-hander Juan Paniagua held the Dash to two hits in his three innings of relief out of the bullpen, striking out three and surrendering a walk, but he did not allow a run.

Pugliese (4-2) was saddled with the loss after facing eight batters but lasting 2/3 of an inning. Andre Wheeler (4-2) picked up his fourth win with a perfect eighth inning out of the Dash bullpen, and Michael Ynoa closed the contest with a perfect ninth inning.

Leyer surrendered a pair of hits and totaled five strikeouts in seven shutout frames but took no decision.

The Pelicans wrap up their three-game series against the Dash on Thursday with the first pitch from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
