Day scores two goals to give Lady Chants second victory

The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team posted a convincing 3-0 victory over Elon Thursday night to even its record at 2-2 and already equal its win total of last year.

Senior forward Ashley Day scored two goals less than seven minutes apart in the first half and freshman midfielder Fia Jonsson added her first career goal in the 74th minute, giving the Chanticleers’ a three-goal output in a game for the second time this season.

Elon (1-2-1) recorded the game’s first shot in the 12th minute, but it was all Chants from that point. They outshot the Phoenix 7-1 over the remainder of the half, with freshman forward Charlotte Ratcliff putting two attempts on goal, one of them a header, and Jonsson getting off a pair of shots. The second of those was stopped by the Phoenix goalkeeper, but the rebound came to Day right in front and she put home the goal less than two minutes after she had entered the game.

Day found the net again on Coastal’s next shot attempt as sophomore forward Shelby Evans chipped a pass into the box to Day, who beat the goalkeeper to the left corner for her fifth career tally. Day’s two-goal effort was the first in a game by a Chanticleer since Hannah Brown scored twice in the Big South Tournament championship game in 2010. The assist by Evans was the first of her career.

Coastal continued to control play once the second half began, firing off three consecutive shots in a span of a minute and 43 seconds, two of which were saved. Jonsson then scored less than five minutes after picking up a yellow card. Shortly after a corner kick by freshman Camille Christie, the Elon goalkeeper came out to a challenge a ball and Jonsson put it in the empty net from 25 yards out.

Even with the three-goal lead, the Chants kept the pressure on, again reeling off three consecutive shots in a short period. They finished the game with a dominating 14-4 edge in shots, putting nine of them on goal, compared to zero for the Phoenix. Junior Megan Spencer and freshman Faith Farley combined on the shutout. Spencer played the first 84 minutes before Farley made her first career appearance.

Coastal won despite again being without senior Morgan Thomas and junior Christina Stern due to injuries. Sophomores Kacey Kelley and Rylie Johnson also did not see action after being shaken up in Sunday’s game against Western Michigan. Instead, a total of five freshman were in head coach Paul Hogan’s starting lineup against the Phoenix. Joining Ratcliff, Jonsson and Christie were Miki Antzoulatos and Megan Wagner.

The Chanticleers return home Sunday to face Wofford, the second of three straight Southern Conference opponents. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the CCU Soccer Field.
