Five Lady Chants, Hogan capture Big South honors

ccuwsoc-10Freshman forward Kayla Christian was named the Big South Conference Freshman of the Year, and for the second year in a row, Paul Hogan was selected the league’s Coach of the Year and five Chanticleer players were honored as part of its 2015 season awards, which were announced on Friday.

Sophomore Daniella Famili is joined on the All-Big South first team by junior forward Amber Adams, while freshman Kayla Christian was tabbed to the second team and was also selected to the All-Freshman team. Senior Darbie Kelley was named to the All-Academic Team and Melanie Flatter received an Honorable mention.

Christian becomes the fourth Coastal Carolina woman to earn a Big South Freshman of the Year award, joining Fia Jonsson (2012), Blair Monroe (2005) and Marisa Kovacs (2000). The forward from Chantilly, Va. played in all 18 games for the Chants while starting 17 of them, scoring eight goals and dishing out three assists. Currently, Christian is sharing the lead on the team in goals and points (19) with teammate Famili. She tallied two game-winning goals, including one in overtime against NC State earning her Big South Attacking Player of the Week honors. She found the back of the net in back-to-back games including a 3-1 win over UAB where she netted all three goals, the first Chant to score a hat-trick since 2009. She earned seven first place votes totaling 15 points. Christian also earned second team All-Conference and freshman team All-Conference honors.

For the second year in a row, Hogan earned Coach of the Year honors. Hogan is one of three Chanticleer coaches earning this honor along with Karrie Miller (2000, 2003) and Rohan Naraine (2007). In his fifth season in Conway, Hogan guided the Chants to a runner-up spot in the regular season with a 7-2-1 record, matching their finish from the 2014 campaign. He has led Coastal to 10-win seasons in each of the last four years, including a 28-12-2 mark in conference games.

Adams established herself as a force all over the field in her third season with the Chants. She started 17 games just missing one due to injury, playing 90 or more in all but five contests, including six of the 10 Big South games. She transitioned from the defensive line into the offense becoming one of the team’s key players in the attack. Adams tallied five goals and a team best of six assists, scoring all five goals during league play. In every game that Adams has netted one, the team went on to win the game.

Famili played in 17 games and made 17 starts in her second season, after quickly becoming one of the team’s top offensive playmakers last season she continued to establish that role once again. She recorded eight goals, a career high tying for most goals on the team with Christian, while tallying three assists. Famili had three game-winning goals include one overtime win versus Georgia Southern while also tabbing an assist. She had recorded at least one point in nine of 16 games.

The honorable mention nod for Flatter is her first conference honor of her career. She made 17 starts at centerback and ranked second on the team in minutes this season with 1,546, including 90 or more in 15 games. In addition to playing a key role in Coastal’s defensive success with three shutouts and six goals allowed in conference play.
