Five simple stretches to improve your golf game

Have you ever noticed the first few holes of a round of golf seem the hardest to play? If you answered ‘yes’ to this question, then you may need to take more time to stretch prior to your next round.

Stretching is a crucial component to any physical activity.  Golf is no different.  Stretching awakens the muscles, loosens the tendons and ligaments and elongates the muscles to create elasticity for movement.

The rotation of the golf swing occurs around the body.  Your goal is to create a rotation that is easy, fluid and flexible.  Stretching will encourage a large range of motion in your golf swing – helping to achieve velocity on the down swing and fluidity throughout.

If you consistently find the first few holes of golf frustrating, it is likely due to inadequate stretching prior to play. Before your next round of golf, try the following stretching exercises.

1) Move your feet shoulders width apart.  Grab a club with both hands extending out horizontally. Stretch your arms and club to the front. Bend down from the waist 5-10 times.

2) With your arms still extending out front with the club, twist to one side for 8 seconds. You will feel a pull in your oblique muscles.  Repeat the motion on the other side for a total of 5-10 times each.

3) Combine steps 1 and 2. Twist to the side, move back to center, and bend down from the waist. Twist to the opposite side, move back to the center and bend at the waist.  Continue this pattern 5-10 times on each side.

4)  With feet together, take a big step back onto your right foot.  Tuck your hips forward and feel the stretch of your hip flexors. Change foot position and repeat the exercise 5-10 times.

5) Gently grip your club and start a continuous, easy swing back and forth 5-10 times.  As an additional stretching exercise, you can take your back hand off the club and continue the swing with your forward arm and shoulder.

    Well said! Stretching is something I never considered until just about a year ago, when my shoulder just couldn’t take those long drives anymore. It makes me so much more limber for my whole game. I’m definitely going to try some of the techniques in your video from here on out.
