Font pitches gem as Pelicans snap four-game losing skid

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans snapped a four game losing streak Wednesday, breaking out the bats and getting sterling pitching from starter Wilmer Font in a 7-2 win at Harry Grove Stadium.

Font, just five starts back from Tommy John surgery, truly dominated for the first time this season, allowing one hit and striking out seven in four innings.  The lone hit against him was a slow single through the right side by Jeremy Nowak in the first.  Font struck out the side in both the first and fourth innings.

The Pelicans offense back Font up as well, waking up after getting only one hit Tuesday.  Myrtle Beach scored first in the second inning with back-to-back leadoff singles by Brett Nicholas and Tomas Telis.  Nicholas scored on a Richmond fielder’s choice two batters later.

Myrtle Beach scored again in the fifth on a bases-loaded single by Santiago Chirino to make it 2-0.  The Birds went up 3-1 on a sac fly from Teodoro Martinez in the seventh.

Things really opened up in the top of the ninth for the Pelicans.  Myrtle Beach hit around, sending nine to the plate and scoring four runs.  Jared Hoying began the rally with a bloop double to shallow left.  Hoying has now reached safely in every game in which he has played this year, except the one in which he was injured against Frederick last week.

Odubel Herrera followed Hoying by walking in front of a Martinez double to score one. Santiago Chirino then singled down the chalk to left, scoring Herrera and Martinez for a 6-1 lead.  It was 7-1 after a Brett Nicholas single to left to plate Chirino.

The Keys did battle of their former teammate Randy Henry in the bottom of the ninth, scoring the first earned run off the Pelicans closer this season.

The win went to Randol Rojas, who worked three and a third innings of relief behind Font.  Jimmy Reyes picked up his Carolina League leading fourth hold.  Justin Moore took his third loss for Frederick.

Myrtle Beach and Frederick conclude their four-game set Thursday at 11 a.m.
