Font pitches Pelicans to shutout victory over Hillcats

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans picked up their league best 10th strikeout of the season Tuesday, topping the Lynchburg Hillcats 3-0 at City Stadium.

Wilmer Font began the dominance on the mound, going a strong first five, allowing only four hits while striking out a career high eight.  Font has now allowed just two runs in his last four appearances and 21 innings.  He’s averaging 10.7 K’s per nine innings in that span.  Joe Van Meter and Ben Rowen tossed the final four innings of the shutout.

In the first two games of the series the Pelicans jumped on the board early, scoring runs in the first inning both times.  Tuesday the Birds waited a bit, but still racked up the runs, scoring three times between the second and third innings.

Brett Nichols did most of the damage, finishing with three hits and two doubles.  Nicholas now has 24 doubles, the active lead in the Carolina League and the second most overall, just two behind Salem’s now promoted centerfielder Jackie Bradley.  Nicholas got on in the second with a single, scoring on a Teodoro Martinez fielder’s choice groundout to make it 1-0.

The first baseman then doubled in the third to plate Christian Villanueva, who had singled before him.  Nicholas came in on a Martinez sac fly.  All three of Nicholas’ hits came off his college roommate at Gonzaga, Lynchburg’s starter Cody Martin.

The Pelicans have guaranteed at least a split with the Hillcats, but will go for the series win Wednesday at 7:05 in Lynchburg.  Kyle Hendricks pitches against Chris Masters, recently sent down from Double-A Mississippi.
