Football, fall sports teams open practice for season

nmbfoot-beachpracticeThe thermometer may say it’s the dog days of summer, but the calendar says it’s time for the fall sports season.

The SCHSL’s official start for fall sports practices is Friday as football teams will take the field in record-setting heat. Volleyball, swimming, cross country and girls tennis and golf are also set to hold tryouts and workouts in the coming weeks as Horry County Schools open Thursday, Aug. 18.

The football season officially opens the following night with Week 0 action, and the CNB Kickoff Classic is set for Aug. 12 at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium. Teams can begin practice Friday in helmets, and full-contact drills will start Aug. 3, followed by intra-squad scrimmages.

All six schools move up one classification this fall (Carolina Forest, Conway and Socastee to Class 5A and Region 6-5A, and Myrtle Beach North Myrtle Beach and St. James to Class 4A and Region 7-4A). Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach opened practice Thursday via SCISA rules as the Saints will compete in Region 3-2A.
