Four former Pelicans named MLB All-Stars

Major League Baseball set the rosters for 83rd All-Star Game Sunday, and four former Myrtle Beach Pelicans were named to the American and National League sides.  Rafael Furcal (1999) and Craig Kimbrel (2008-2009) were named to the National league team while Texas Rangers Elvis Andrus (2007) and Matt Harrison (2006) were named to the American League squad.  Furcal is the only one of the four to be named as starter, and will open at shortstop for the NL.

This is the third all-star selection for Furcal, currently with the St.  Louis Cardinals.  He is batting .280 with five homeruns, 31 RBI and nine steals.  His seven errors are the fewest among all regular NL shortstops.   Kimbrel is now two-for-two in all-star selections, as he’s made the team in both of his Major League seasons.   He leads the NL with 23 saves while sporting a miniscule 1.50 ERA through June for the Braves.

Andrus is also making his second all-star appearance for the Pelicans parent club, the Texas Rangers.  Currently, he leads the AL with five triples and leads all AL shortstops in Runs (51), walks (36), steals (16) and on-base percentage (.381).  He is hitting .301 with one homerun and 31 RBI.  This is the first all-star selection for Harrison, who is now in his fifth season with the Rangers.  He is tied for the AL lead with 11 wins and also has a 3.16 ERA with 65 strikeouts in 105.1 innings.

The 2012 All-Star Game is July 10 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, MO at 8pm.  In all, the Pelicans parent club, the Texas Rangers, will have seven and possibly eight representatives at the game.  Mike Napoli, Adrian Beltre and Josh Hamilton will all start for the American League at catcher, third Base and leftfield, respectively.  The other Rangers include Harrison, closer Joe Nathan, Andrus and second baseman Ian Kinsler.   Starting Pitcher Yu Darvish is among the five final vote participants along with Royals closer Jonathan Broxton, Angels closer Ernesto Frieri, Orioles starter Jason Hammel and White Sox starter Jake Peavy.
