Games go on after Dorian throws schedules for loop

Despite Hurricane Dorian costing Horry County Schools a week of competition, the South Carolina High School League announced Monday that the 2019-20 fall sports season will continue as scheduled barring any future inclement weather emergencies.

“I am comfortable stating the regular season will continue as previously scheduled due to Hurricane Dorian was not as destructive as past storms we have endured,” said SCHSL Commissioner Jerome Singleton. “We are grateful South Carolina did not receive the brunt of weather that some parts of the southeastern United States experienced. The SCHSL looks forward to assisting any and all districts with their schedule needs due to the impact of the storm.”

Horry County Schools’ sports teams were idle last week while the storm approached the Carolina coast and left minor damage in its wake. The closure of schools caused the cancellation of all matches and practices, including Friday night’s Week 2 football lineup.

Among the games that were canceled and will not be rescheduled were Laurens at Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle at West Brunswick (NC), Conway at Sumter, Oceanside Collegiate at Socastee, and Carolina Forest at Colleton County.

Teams were permitted to return to local practice fields on Saturday and regularly scheduled events resumed Monday. The Friday’s Week 3 football schedule includes Myrtle Beach at Socastee, Hoggard (NC) at Carolina Forest, St. James at North Myrtle Beach, and Hartsville at Conway.

Horry County Schools missed a month last year for Hurricane Florence but the SCHSL added only one week to the schedule.

Mondays results included:

Volleyball

* North Myrtle Beach 3, Carolina Forest 0: The visiting Chiefs defeated the Panthers 25-17, 25-15, 25-21 to earn the sweep.

Raegan Matney and Jordan Berger led the Chiefs with six kills each followed by Anna Rabon, Jenna Berger, Kaydee Runion, and Jennings Hall with 5 kills each. Raegan also dished out 24 assist.

The Chiefs play Myrtle Beach Tuesday in a region match.

Girls Golf

* Carolina Forest 172, Conway 202: The Lady Panthers started the regular season off strong with a 28-stroke victory over Conway on Monday.

Carolina Forest freshman Mia Gray posted a -2 under par 34 to claim medalist honors. Teammate Alayna Fortenberry shot 37, Savannah Samson carded a 47 and Brooke Holmes shot 54.
