Georgia Tech’s grand slam wrecks Coastal in opener

gtbaseBrandt Stallings blew open a tight game with a grand slam in the fifth to lead #25 Georgia Tech to a 9-1 victory over #13 Coastal Carolina Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 28-14 while the Chanticleers fall to 31-12. The teams will play game two of the three-game series on Saturday with first pitch set for 4 pm on ESPN3.

Georgia Tech broke the stalemate with three runs in the third. The inning could have been bigger for the Yellow Jackets but Billy Cooke made an impressive diving catch in deep center field to record the first out in the inning. Arden Pabst, Connor Justus and Carter Hall each walked to load the bases. Matt Gonzalez plated Pabst with a sacrifice fly to right field. Kel Johnson then hit a fly ball for the apparent third out, but an error allowed Justus and Hall to score.

The Jackets extended their lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Trevor Craport hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a single by Stallings and scored on a single through the right side by Ryan Peurifoy.

Coastal got on the board with a run in the fifth. Matt Beaird drew a one-out walk and Michael Paez reached on a two-out walk. G.K. Young fouled off several pitches before lining a 1-2 pitch to right center field to drive in Beaird.

Tech rallied back in the home half of the fifth. With bases loaded, Stallings hit a grand slam to center field for an 8-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets pushed their lead to 9-1 in the seventh. Johnson hit a leadoff ground-rule double, moved to third on a fly out and scored on an RBI ground out by Craport.

Brandon Gold improved to 5-2 on the season as he allowed six hits, one run and two walks over eight complete with five strikeouts. Coastal’s Alex Cunningham suffered the loss and dropped to 6-3 as he allowed six hits and seven runs (five earned) with five walks in 4.1 innings.
