Girls Hoops: CF nips NMB; MB, SJ crush county rivals

If Tuesday night’s home opener for the Carolina Forest girls basketball team is any indication, this season should be an exciting one.

The Lady Panthers (3-0) battled North Myrtle Beach in a tight contest all night before coming away with a hard-fought 44-43 victory.

Carolina Forest’s Ellen Nardella led the Panthers in scoring with 14 points and four 3-pointers, Alexis Tomlin added 12 points and 7 blocks, Aubrey Bowen had 9 points, and Cheyenne Pyles-Moultrie scored 6 points.

North Myrtle Beach was led by Jenna Berger with a game-high 16 points, and Daveona Hatchell added 10 points.

The Chiefs travel to West Brunswick (NC) on Wednesday. The Panthers host Myrtle Beach on Friday.

* Myrtle Beach 62, Socastee 31: With the loss of three college scholarship players last season, Myrtle Beach had several question marks entering Tuesday’s home opener. The Lady Seahawks answered them emphatically by doubling up visiting Socastee.

Led by newcomers Aija Kelly and Asia Davis, the Seahawks (1-0) jumped out to a double-digit lead early and stretched it to 34-15 at halftime. Myrtle Beach held Socastee to 2 points in the third to lead 49-17 entering the final frame. Socastee outscored Myrtle Beach 15-14 in the fourth quarter with the game out of reach.

* St. James 47, Aynor 19: Hunter Clapham scored a game-high 16 points, nearly outscoring the visiting Lady Blue Jackets single-handedly in the intra-county contest.

The Lady Sharks (2-1) also got 8 points apiece from Ilenne De Los Santos and Cherish Washington, and Maq Schult and Kendall Heidt each added 4 points. St. James held Aynor to only 4 second-half points.

St. James hosts Conway on Wednesday.
