Golden Flashes, Burch drop hammer on Chants, 9-1

ccubase-paez2Kent State’s Luke Burch went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Alex Miklos was 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Golden Flashes (4-4) to a 9-1 victory versus Coastal Carolina (6-3) Saturday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium as part of the Chanticleer Classic.

Kent State blew open a close game by scoring four runs in the sixth inning and three in the eighth to secure the win. Also, KSU pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of six walks and two hit batters while holding the Chanticleers to just four hits.

Kent State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Burch hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a CCU error. Jacob Neuschaefer walked and stole second. Two batters later, Zarley Zalewski drove in Burch with an RBI ground out. Alex Miklos followed with an RBI single to right field.

Coastal got one of those runs back in the second inning. Casey Schroeder walked and G.K. Young doubled. David Parrett reached on an error, which allowed Schroeder to score.

The Golden Flashes extended their lead to 6-1 with four runs in the top of the sixth. Sawyer Polen was hit by a pitch and Zalewski singled. After a wild pitch moved the two up 90 feet, Miklos delivered a two-run double down the right field line. Kent State loaded the bases with two outs and Burch single dropped on the left field line to plate Miklos and Curtis Olvey.

Kent State put the game out of reach with three runs in the eighth inning. Jeff Revesz, Zach Beckner and Burch had consecutive singles to start the frame. Neuschaefer walked to force home Revesz, Polen was hit by a pitch to force home Beckner and Burch scored when Zalewski hit into a double play.

KSU starter Jared Skolnicki (2-1) scattered four hits and allowed the one run in 7.0 innings. He walked two and struck out two. Chase Adkins (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing five hits and four runs in 5.0 innings.

Coastal Carolina will return to action Sunday, hosting Ball State at 1 pm at Springs Brooks Stadium before concluding the Chanticleer Classic with a Noon first pitch versus #25 Illinois Monday.
