Golf: Sharks ace opener; MB runs table in first week

The three-time reigning state champion St. James girls golf team launched its title defense Thursday in a nine-hole match at Traces Golf Club over West Florence.

The Lady Sharks won their first regular season match by firing a 2-over 146 to top the host Lady Knights’ team score of 224.

The Lady Sharks were led by freshman Adrian Anderson, who earned medalist honors by shooting 3-under 33. Senior Smith Knaffle was not far off with a bogey free 2-under 34. Senior Katie Smith was third lowest in the match with a 37, and sophomore Amanda Meno rounded out the top four scores with a 42.

West Florence scores included Alla McGillivray (51), Adeline Cain (61), Taliyia Brown (54), and Julia Kleine (58).

The Sharks travel to the Mid-Carolina Country Club for the Palmetto Preview on Tuesday where they will face the top teams in the state.

* The Myrtle Beach girls golf team completed a busy week with an unbeaten record, earning wins over local rivals Carolina Forest, North Myrtle Beach and Georgetown.

On Thursday, Myrtle Beach defeated the Lady Chiefs 182-207. Taylor Pirttima led the team with a 42, followed by Essie Rike (43), Jaiden Vaugh (48) and Sophia LiVigni 49.

The Lady Seahawks defeated Carolina Forest 175-187. Pirttima shot 41, followed by Rike (43), Vaugh (45) and LiVigni (46).

Myrtle Beach started the week with a win over Georgetown 196-210. Pirttima (46), Vaugh (48), LiVigni (50) and Madison Hinde (52) led the way.

The Pelicans’ had more than 5,500 fans for the first game in 1999, but 2017 attendance has declined to an average of 3,587, according to Minor League Baseball statistics.

Fox Simons, Myrtle Beach assistant city manager, has said some of the stadium improvements include replacing perimeter fencing, installing new gates and replacing the main roof. The city has also budgeted $1 million for field replacement in the five-year capital improvements plan.

* Conway won a tri-match over Aynor and Loris on Wednesday at Diamondback Golf Club.

Aynor’s Rachael Wilkinson shot 41 to claim individual medalist honors, but the Lady Tigers had the second and third medalist to get the team victory.

Conway’s Taylor Reaves shot 42 and Lora Ledbetter fired 43 to lead the Lady Tigers to a team total of 215, a six-stroke win over Loris (221) and a 20-win stroke over Aynor (235).
