Henderson leads CCU to third place in Hawaii tourney

Junior Brittany Henderson’s even par first day leads the field and the Coastal Carolina women’s golf team at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Waikiki, Hawaii, and has the Chanticleers five strokes off the team lead with 18 holes to play.

Coastal (305-305 – 607) trails Gonzaga (303-300 – 602) by five strokes with its two-round score of 31-over par.  No. 12 Texas A&M (303-300 – 603) sits in second between the Bulldogs and Chants with a 27-over 36-hole score. UC Davis (298-310 – 608) and Texas State (311-303 – 614) round out the top five after one day of play.

Henderson’s two-round even par score has her atop the individual leaderboard. Henderson sat a stroke over through her first nine holes of the day, but knocked down a birdie on the 17th hole, her 14th hole of the day, to put her back to even par. The Smith Falls, Ontario, native carded four birdies over her second 18 holes, but four bogeys pulled her back to even on the par-72 course.

Jessica Alexander is tied for seventh in the 82 competitor field with a 36-hole score of 151 (77-74). Alexander played 4-over through the front nine of her first round before carding 1-over with a pair of birdies on the back nine. The junior improved by three strokes on her second 18 as she shot par on 14 holes and birdied one versus three bogeys.

Frida Castillo fired a 77 on her first round and a 78 on her second round to finish the day tied for 28th with a 36-hole score of 155. The freshman turned in three birdies on the day but was undone by two double bogeys. Kaitlin Higginbotham sits tied for 54th overall as she turned in a 160 (79-81) over the two rounds.

Courtney Boe rounded out the Chanticleer contingent with a 163.

The third and final round gets underway Wednesday with a 2 p.m. (ET) shotgun start. Coastal will play alongside Gonzaga, Texas A&M and UC Davis.
