Coastal Carolina outscored Charleston Southern 15-10 in the extra session en route to a 77-72 win and their second straight overtime victory.

The victory was Coastal’s sixth in the past seven games and improves the squad to 13-13 on the season and 8-8 in Big South play. The loss knocks Charleston Southern to 8-16 (3-12 Big South) on the season. If the season were to end today, the Chanticleers and Buccaneers would meet again in the first round of the 2013 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Basketball Championships.

Junior Katelyn Connor led the Chants with a career-high 22 points on 9-of-19 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Charleston Southern was paced by Lakeitha Alston’s 21-point, 13-rebound double-double. DJ Fowler also scored in double figures for the Buccaneers, while Erin Bratcher and Shay Jones each chipped in 14.

With Coastal leading 47-46 in the second half AJ Jordan, Connor and Cook combined to reel off 12 unanswered points to push the Chanticleers out to a game-high 13-point lead at 59-46 with 4:51 to play in regulation. Charleston Southern then used a trio of 3-pointers along with five free throws and a layup by Alston to regain their first lead since late in the first half at 62-59 with four seconds left on the clock.

Coastal botched the ensuing inbound pass, giving the Buccaneers the ball at their own time line with 3.2 seconds to play. The game looked to be over before Henry stole the Charleston Southern inbound pass and sank her second trey of the game, sending the game into overtime.

Connor started the extra session with a layup that was followed by a pair of free throws by Henry to take a 66-22 lead. Cook then sank a mid-range jumper after Jones missed a 3-pointer on the other end. Cook capped Coastal’s 8-0 run with a two free throws, giving the Chants a 70-62 lead with 2:46 to play in overtime.
