Highlanders down Chants, take over first place in BSC

ccubase-michael paez vs wku 1 (2)Radford capitalized on five walks and an error in the decisive third inning to claim a 7-1 victory versus #18 Coastal Carolina Sunday at Springs Brooks Stadium.

With the win, the Highlanders (25-13 and 12-3 in the league) win the series, two games to one, and take a one-game lead in the Big South standings over the Chanticleers (27-12, 11-4).

Hunter Higgerson led the Radford offense, getting three of his team’s six hits. Overall, he was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Mitchell MacKeith (5-3) earned the victory. He pitched 7.1 innings, allowing four hits, one run and three walks with one strikeout. He worked his way out of some early jams by inducing three double plays in the first four innings.

Radford took advantage of a Chanticleer error to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Patrick Marshall drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a Higgerson double. Two batters later, Aaron Scoville hit a ground ball to third, but an error allowed Marshall to score the game’s first run.

The Highlanders exploded for five runs in the third. Two walks and an error loaded the bases. Marshall then forced home Josh Gardiner with a third walk of the inning. Higgerson delivered his second double in as many innings, driving in Shane Johnsonbaugh and Josh Reavis. Aaron Scoville lined a two-run single to center field for the 6-0 lead.

Radford tacked on a run in the seventh. Reavis, Marshall and Higgerson had consecutive singles to start the frame, the last being an RBI for Higgerson.

Coastal avoided the shutout with a run in the eighth. G.K. Young, who was 2-for-4, singled, moved to second on a ground out and scored on an RBI single by Billy Cooke, marking his first collegiate hit. Cooke, who was the opening-day starter in centerfield, has only played in seven games due to a hand injury, starting each of the last two contests.
