Hoops: MB boys, CF girls advance in tournaments

Close games were again the order of the day in Friday’s second round of the Panther Classic, including a pair of two-point contests involving local teams.

Coming off a one-point win in Thursday’s opener, Myrtle Beach squeaked out a 79-77 victory over Covington (TN) to advance to the semifinals bracket.

North Myrtle Beach suffered a 78-76 overtime defeat to Calhoun County. Cheraw downed Franklin County (GA) in another nail-biter.

Other scores included Conway over East Hall 80-59; John Handley (VA) 49-30 over Carvers Bay; and Keenan blew out Andrews 86-46.

Here’s Saturday’s schedule: Carolina Forest vs NMB 10:30am: East Hall vs Carvers Bay 12pm semifinal: John Handley vs MB 1:30pm semifinal: Keenan vs Cheraw 3:00pm: Covington vs Andrews 4:30pm: Conway vs Calhoun County 6:00pm: Franklin County vs Carvers Bay 7:30pm: Carolina Forest vs Andrews 9:00pm Championship (semifinal winners)

* North Charleston 52, St. James 48: The Sharks suffered a tough loss to the Cougars.

Girls

* Carolina Forest 62, Emerald 58: The Lady Panthers won for the second straight night to advance to the finals of the Upstate Christmas Tournament in Greenville.

Carolina Forest beat a much bigger Emerald with some hot outside shooting night. Sophomore guard Ally Niles poured in five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. Carlie Skolski led the team with team high 25 points, 8 boards and solid defense. Teammates Gabby Giracello added a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. Reilly Ward added 5, while Jordan Martin added 2.

The Lady Panthers won the first game of the tournament by defeating Southside 51-47. They play top-ranked Sumter in the championship game Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

* Socastee 57, Philip Simmons 54: The Braves held off a hard charge from the Iron Horses for the victory.

* Orangeburg-Wilkinson 50, St. James 38: The Lady Sharks suffered a tough loss to the Lady Bears.

* Westwood 57, Myrtle Beach 52: The Lady Seahawks suffered another tough loss in the CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational.
