Hoops: Sharks claim first region win over Panthers

A big win for the St. James boys basketball team could prove to be an even bigger loss for Carolina Forest.

The Sharks scored a 59-53 victory over the visiting Region 6-5A rival Panthers, who saw two-sport standout Mason Garcia exit the game in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury.

St. James scored 23 points in the fourth period to earn its first region victory behind Deondray Stanfield’s 17 points. Austin Werba had 11 points and Candido Ortiz-Robles III had 10 points and 7 rebounds. Jeremiah Nesbitt and Chris Anderson both had 9 points each.

Carolina Forest was led by PJ Robinson with 12 points. Alex Greene and Garcia finished with 11 apiece.

* West Florence 65, Conway 58: The Tigers took the Knights to the fourth quarter before falling in a key Region 6-5A matchup.

* Hartsville 75, North Myrtle Beach 68 (OT): The Chiefs fell short of their second win over a Pee Dee opponent in a week with an overtime loss to the Region 6-4A foe Red Foxes.

* Wilson 70, Myrtle Beach 69: The Seahawks blew an 18-point halftime lead as the Tigers came back to win on a buzzer-beater in a Region 6-4A contest.

* South Florence 75, Socastee 60: The Braves suffered a tough road loss to the Region 6-5A rival Bruins.

Girls

* Wilson 46, Myrtle Beach 39: The Lady Seahawks couldn’t hold off the Lady Tigers’ defense in a home defeat to the first place team in Region 6-4A.

Asia Smith scored 15 points to lead the Lady Seahawks.

* Carolina Forest 52, St. James 33: The Lady Panthers had another strong showing on the road to beat the Lady Sharks in a Region 6-5A clash.

The Lady Panthers were led by Ally Niles with 15 points, followed by Gabby Giracello and Reilly Ward with 11 points apiece.

* South Florence 43, Socastee 40: The Lady Braves couldn’t pull off the win on the road to the Lady Bruins in a Region 6-5A showdown.
