Hoosier Daddy? Chanticleers get spanked by Indiana, 9-1

Indiana (5-2) scored three runs in the first inning and three in the fifth en route to a 9-1 victory Saturday over host Coastal Carolina (4-5) in the Caravelle Resort’s Baseball at the Beach, played at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Caravelle Resort’s Baseball at the Beach concludes Sunday with Indiana facing UMBC at 10 am, West Virginia versus Florida Atlantic at 1:30 pm and #10 NC State at Coastal at 5 pm.

The Hoosiers also received a solid pitching performance from starter Joey DeNato (1-1). The junior scattered five hits over 7.1 innings, allowing one run and five walks with three strikeouts. Michael Basil led IU at the plate, going 4-for-5, while Chad Clark delivered a decisive three-run double in the fifth.

Indiana raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Justin Cureton drew a leadoff walk and Kyle Schwarber followed with a double. Sam Travis reached on an error, allowing Cureton to score. Scott Donley delivered an RBI single to right field and Basil plated Travis with an RBI fielder’s choice. Dustin DeMuth looked to add a fourth run with a single to right, but Coastal’s Colin Hering threw out Basil at home.

The Chanticleers got on the board with a run in the third. Ted Blackman and Alex Buccilli drew back-to-back walks and Will Remillard came through with a two-out, RBI single to center field.

The Hoosiers took advantage of a CCU error to score three more in the fifth. New Chanticleer pitcher Patrick Corbett got a strikeout and a ground ball to start the fifth, but a throwing error on the second batter allowed Donley to reach. After a single by Basil, Casey Smith flew out. DeMuth drew a walk to load the bases and Clark followed with a three-run double for a 6-1 lead.

Indiana tacked on three runs in the ninth to provide the 9-1 final. Basil and DeMuth each had RBI singles and Smith had an RBI ground out.

Ben Smith (0-1) was saddled with the loss. The sophomore allowed five hits and three runs (two earned) over four innings with three walks and two strikeouts. Corbett also pitched four innings, allowing five hits and four runs (one earned) with a walk and five strikeouts. Zach Remillard and Justin Creel each had two hits for the Chants.
