Hurricane Dorian calls halt to Strand sports schedule

Hurricane Dorian is not expected to make landfall on the Grand Strand but the storm is having a major impact on the local sports schedule.

In local high school sports, Horry County Schools are closed until further notice, and so are the sporting events. All games and practices are off for this week, including Friday night’s football games. Any makeup dates will be announced in the future.

Coastal Carolina University also announced it is closing and the sports teams are scrambling to resolve their schedules. The football traveled to Greenville on Monday and will train there before flying out to Kansas on Friday for their game versus Kansas on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Other CCU sports teams in season have made the following evacuation plans:

* Men’s and Women’s Cross Country: Traveled to Charlotte, N.C. as a team. Their next meet, the Buccaneer Open hosted by Charleston Southern, on Sept. 7 has been canceled.

* Men’s Golf: Will head to Wisconsin on Tuesday, Sept. 3, in preparation for their season-opening event at the Badger Invitational on Sept. 8-10.

* Women’s Golf: Traveled as a team to Columbia to practice in preparation for their first fall event in two weeks.

* Men’s Soccer: Also traveled to Charlotte, N.C. ahead of their Friday night road contest versus the Charlotte 49ers at 7 p.m. ET.

* Women’s Soccer: Relocated to Charlotte, N.C. As of now, there is no new update on soccer competing this upcoming weekend as they are scheduled to host Jacksonville on Friday, Sept. 6, and Longwood on Sunday, Sept. 8.

* Volleyball: Headed to Greensboro, N.C. as a team to practice due to the campus closure. Coach Joszef Forman and his staff are trying to relocate the Coastal Carolina Classic home tournament to either Charlotte or UNC Greensboro.

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans’ season finale was set for Monday against the Wilmington Blue Rocks at Frawley Stadium, but the Carolina League consulted with the parent clubs and opted to wrap up the regular season a day early.

The move was made to give players and coaches time to return to Myrtle Beach and evacuate for the season. The Pelicans did not qualify for the Carolina League playoffs.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Hurricane Dorian was a Category 2 moving along the Florida coast. Check back for updates.
