It’s official: Golson gets the starting nod for Notre Dame

It took him one year, but Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly has finally realized what Myrtle Beach football fans have known for a long time – Everett Golson is THE MAN.

Kelly made it official Thursday that the former Seahawk will start for the Fighting Irish in their Sept. 1 opener overseas against Navy, according to multiple media outlets. The sixth most proficient passer in high school history will make his collegiate debut in Dublin, Ireland as the starting quarterback for one of the most storied programs in college football history.

Golson, a 6-foot redshirt freshman with no game experience, won a four-way competition with his consistent play since the start of spring practice. He wasn’t just accurate – one interception in his first 126 passes in fall practice – but he rarely dropped the ball in the decision-making aspect of the game, either.

Incumbent starter Tommy Rees and junior Andrew Hendrix, along with top recruit Gunner Kiel, are the competitors for the backup job. Rees, 12-4 in his career as a starter, is suspended for the opener. He threw 14 interceptions last season, including two in an 18-14 loss to Florida State in the Champs Sports Bowl.

Golson has the combination of athleticism as a runner, zip as a passer and mentality of a quarterback to hold onto the job if he remains poised and delivers under pressure in Dublin. The Irish faltered last season because they were doomed by meltdowns behind center.

Golson threw 150 touchdowns to only 25 interceptions as a four-year starter at Myrtle Beach, throwing 24 TDs and one pick in his injury-shortened senior season but still managing to tally 11,588 career yards through the air. More importantly, he led the Seahawks to back-to-back state championships.

Those are something that have been sorely missing the from the Irish’s trophy case as blue-chip QB after blue-chip QB have come to South Bend only to leave in disappointment. Now Golson will get the chance to lead Notre Dame back to national prominence.
