Jackson, bullpen hurl gem as Pelicans pound P-Nats, 9-2

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, thanks to a strong start by pitcher Luke Jackson, came out victorious 9-2 at Pelicans Ballpark on Wednesday.

Jackson delivered another solid start striking out seven and no-hitting Potomac through five innings before a sixth-inning Francisco Soriano double broke it up. Relievers Jimmy Reyes, Zach Osborne, and Francisco Mendoza combined for 3 1/3 innings of one-run baseball.

An erratic throw by Nationals leftfielder J.P. Ramirez off of a bases loaded single by Teodoro Martinez opened up the floodgates and allowed all three Pelicans baserunners to score in the first and put starting pitcher Nathan Karns in a 3-0 hole the Nationals weren’t able to climb out of.

The Pelicans added two more in the second on RBI by Hanser Alberto and Vinny DiFazio. Karns was pulled after just two innings and giving up five runs, three earned.

Nationals reliever Adam Olbrychowski briefly stopped the bleeding for three innings before the Pelicans lit up Adam Carr and Joe Testa for four hits and four runs combined over the final three frames.

The Pelicans offense was both opportunistic and fortunate as the P-Nats allowed nine walks to the Birds and committed three errors on defense.

The Pelicans however took advantage of those mistakes with six hits when runners were in scoring position. Difazio reached base four times and scored three runs and Jeremy Williams added three hits of his own.

The Pelicans attempt to win the series Thursday night with Pelicans Starter Joe Van Meter taking on Rob Gilliam. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
