Jaguars rally in ninth inning for walk-off win over CCU

ccubase-25pitchSouth Alabama scored three runs in the eighth inning and had a bases-loaded, walk-off single in the ninth to claim a 4-3 victory over #26 Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon at Stanky Field.

While Coastal won the series with victories in games one and two, it falls to 22-13-1 overall and 10-4-1 in the Sun Belt. The Jaguars improve to 21-16, 10-5.

In the ninth for South Alabama, Brendan Donovan drew a leadoff walk and, two batters later, Wells Davis was hit by a pitch. Then, with two outs, Eddie Paparella walked to load the bases and Dylan Hardy, who had four of South Alabama’s six hits, singled to left field to drive in the game winner.

The loss spoiled a big day by Coastal’s Wood Myers, who was 3-for-4, while Billy Cooke and Jordan Gore each had two hits as the Chanticleers out-hit USA 11-6.

Coastal broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. Gore hit a leadoff single and, with two outs, Myers singled. Kieton Rivers guided a 3-2 pitch through the right side of the infield for an RBI single.

Both pitchers worked in and out of trouble through the middle innings, Coastal leaving five runners on base through six and the Jaguars left eight.

In the seventh, Seth Lancaster gave Coastal a little breathing room with a one-out, solo home run. The dinger, his fifth of the season, gave CCU a 2-0 lead.

The Chants tacked on another run in the eighth for a 3-0 advantage. Gore hit a one-out single and stole second. Kevin Woodall Jr., was hit by a pitch before Myers singled up the middle to plate Gore.

South Alabama got on the scoreboard and tied the game with three runs in the eighth. Travis Swaggerty drew a leadoff walk, Davis singled and Jared Barnes walked to load the bases. Paparella brought home Swaggety on a sacrifice fly. Hardy, who had three of USA’s first four hits, singled to bring home Davis. With two outs, Hunter Stokes lined a single to center to tie the game, 3-3.

Jason Bilous gave Coastal six solid innings, allowing two hits and no run with six strikeouts and six walks. Anthony Veneziano (2-2) suffered the loss. He started the ninth and allowed one walk and hit a batter with a strikeout in 0.2 innings.

Coastal will continue its five-game road swing with a contest at College of Charleston this Wednesday with first pitch set for 6 pm at Patriots Point.
