Johnson earns $1.5 million, but loses his caddie to Tiger

Former Coastal Carolina golf standout Dustin Johnson made more than $1.5 million Sunday without winning a tournament.

As it turns out, he will have to spend at least part of that prize money finding a new caddie.

Johnson shot even-par 70 in Sunday’s final round of the PGA Tour Championship to claim a tie for 23rd place, clinching a fourth-place finish in the season’s FedEx points standings to collect a $1.5 million bonus (plus $142,000 in chump change for his 23rd-place tie in the tournament).

But the big payday was tempered by news that Tiger Woods has hired away his caddie, Joe LaCava, who has been on the bag for Johnson since June.

Woods has been seeking a permanent caddie since he parted ways with Steve Williams, ending a relationship that spanned 12 years.

“Joe LaCava is an outstanding caddie and I have known him since I was an amateur, really looking forward to having him on the bag,” Woods posted on his Twitter account on Sunday night.

Woods’ former swing coach, Butch Harmon, who also works with Johnson, recommended LaCava to Johnson. Harmon told the Associated Press Sunday night that he was “shocked” by the move.

“The thing that bothered me the most was T.W. not calling Dustin and asking if he could talk to Joe,” he said. “That’s the way it’s done. I’m a little disappointed with the way Tiger handled it. But I’m not surprised.”
