Keys outpitch Pelicans in front of crowd of 9,000-plus

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell 3-0 Saturday to the Frederick Keys in a pitching duel that lived up to its superstar billing.

In front of a standing room only crowd of 9,477 at Frederick’s Harry Grove Stadium, starting pitchers and Carolina League all-stars Randy Henry and Dylan Bundy battled for five innings each.

Bundy wound up getting the better result, yielding no runs on only two hits while striking out two.  Henry was effective as well, allowing only one run on three hits, all doubles, in five strong.  Bundy picked up the win, his third, with Henry suffering his third loss and 14th overall decision in 20 appearances.

The offense for Frederick came in two spurts.  The Keys first struck in the third inning when Steven Bumbry was hit by a pitch with one out.  He then stole second and took third on an errant throw by catcher Tomas Telis.  Joe Olivera, batting .164 at the start of play, then slammed a double off the left-centerfield wall, scoring Bumbry for a 1-0 lead.

Frederick’s second wave of offense came off reliever Zach Osborne in the sixth inning.  Uncharacteristically, Osborne allowed hits to the first three batters, the loudest of which was an Aaron Baker two run homer off the second tier of the outfield wall in right.  The two-run blast was the slugger’s league leading 13th of the season and made it 3-0.

Myrtle Beach threatened on several occasions but could never force a run across.  The Pelicans left Odubel Herrera at second base against Bundy in the third inning and then left two runners on in the fourth.  The Pelicans biggest threat, however, came in the sixth inning off reliever Jason Gurka.  Recently promoted Hanser Alberto raked a triple to the leftfield corner with only one out.  He was left stranded when Christian Villanueva and Tomas Telis both got out on strikes and a grounder respectively.

The loss drops the Pelicans to 2-1 to open the second half of the season.  Myrtle Beach next travels to Lynchburg Sunday at 6:05.
