Lacrosse: CF girls net win; St. James sweeps openers

The Carolina Forest girls lacrosse team hosted a playoff game for the first time in the programs short four-year history on Tuesday, and the Lady Panthers made sure it was happy occasion by defeating Blythewood 11-3.

Carolina Forest jumped out to a 5-0 lead on smart ball movement and solid defensive play led by freshmen goalie Lizzy Oliver, who finished the game with eight saves and only allowed one goal. It was 9-1 at halftime and the Lady Panthers built a double-digit lead before calling off the dogs.

Leading the Lady Panthers in scoring was Abigail Gross with four goals. Teammates Star Graham and Gabby Koseroski each had two goals and an assist, Izzy DiMarino added two goals, and Serena Elias rounded out the scoring with a goal. Mary Alice Buzzek had an assist. Backup goalie Arwen Jeger made three saves.

The Panthers now await the winner of the JL Mann/Boiling Springs game in Thursday’s second-round match of the Class 5A playoffs.

* St. James 16, Waccamaw 1: The third-seeded Lady Sharks steamrolled past the Lady Warriors in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. They advance to face the winner of May River-Hilton Head on Thursday.

* Bishop England 20, Myrtle Beach 1: The Lady Seahawks’ first-ever playoff appearance was a tough one against the top-seeded Bishops.

* Clover 17, Socastee 7: The seventh-seeded Lady Braves were upset at home in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Boys

* St. James 7, Waccamaw 6: The third-seeded Sharks won a thriller in their playoff opener over the sixth-seeded Warriors.

After Waccamaw managed to tie the match at 6-all in the final minutes, St. James’ Brandon Mitchell recorded the game-winner in the waning seconds to help the Sharks make history.

They advance to face the winner of May River-Academic Magnet in Thursday’s second-round match of the Class 4A.
