Volleyball: Braves win title; Panthers, Chiefs fare well

socvolley-teamThe Socastee High volleyball team made an impressive trek over the North Carolina border to capture the championship of the Lady Wildcat Invitational, hosted by east Chapel Hill (NC) High.

The Lady Braves battled to a 3-2 victory in the final over Northwest Guilford (NC) to start the season with a 4-0 record. Selected to the All-Tournament team was Socastee outside hitters Mary Guest and Dale Rogers, who was selected as the tournament MVP.

Socastee defeated Cedar Grove, Chapel Hill and east Chapel Hill to reach the title match. The Lady Braves needed a fifth-set tiebreaker to claim the championship and get off to a strong start to the season.

* Carolina Forest earned the No. 2 seed after pool play in Saturday’s Lady Panther Volleyball Invitational but failed to reach the finals in tournament play.

North Myrtle Beach claimed the No. 3 overall seed and St. James was middle of the pack at eighth in the 15-team field, but it was Aiken advancing to defeat Ashley Hall 2-1 in a dramatic title match. Aiken freshman outside hitter Chloe Neeley was named Tournament MVP.

The host Lady Panthers went 6-2 in pool play, sweeping Belton Honea Path and Summerville  2-0 and splitting with Cardinal Newman and Aiken 1-1. In their first round of tournament play, the Lady Panthers defeated Aynor 2-0 before being defeated by Aiken.

Carolina Forest sophomore Alexis Tomlin was named to the All-Tournament Team with 19 kills and 9 aces for the day. Also leading the Lady Panthers was Ellissa Smalls with 17 kills, 5 aces and 3 blocks. Maddie Roy of North Myrtle Beach and Mallory Farmer of St. James also made the list.
