Lady Chanticleers take third straight loss to Lady Blazers

Despite Megan Spencer’s save on a second-half penalty kick, the Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to UAB Friday night at the CCU Soccer Field.

UAB scored twice in the final five minutes to notch the victory and improve to 6-1 on the season. The Chanticleers fell to 3-3-1.

Fia Jonsson tallied the lone goal for Coastal, finding the back of the net for the third straight game. Her 25-yard blast from the left wing into the top right corner tied the game at 1-1 in the 21st minute.

Jonsson had another opportunity early in the second half, but her shot from the middle missed just wide of the left post.

UAB began to take control after that and spent much of the remainder of the game on the Chants’ half of the field. The Blazers eventually drew a golden opportunity when an attacker was taken down inside the 18-yard box with just under 14 minutes to play. UAB’s Mary Catherine Combs sent the penalty kick toward the upper left corner, but a leaping Spencer was able to get over and knock it away with her right hand.

However, UAB kept the pressure on and eventually took a 2-1 lead in the 86th minute when Amy Harrison put home a rebound off her own shot in front. The Blazers added the final goal in the 89th minute as Kasey Johnson scored off an assist by Abby Phillips.

Paige Hanks opened the scoring for UAB in the 14th minute when her shot from the left corner of the box toward the right post deflected off a Coastal defender.

The Blazers finished the game with a 15-9 shot advantage, including 9-4 in the second half. UAB also had six corner kicks in the final 45 minutes compared to just two for the Chanticleers.

Despite taking the loss, Spencer finished with five saves. Coastal did put six of its nine shot attempts on goal, but UAB’s Courtnie Northern also made five saves.

The Chants travel to UNC Wilmington on Thursday, Sept. 19 for their final nonconference game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
