Chanticleers fall to Jaguars in Sun Belt championship

The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team fell to four-time defending champion South Alabama, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at the Foley Sports Complex in the Sun Belt championship match. Coastal Carolina was attempting to be the first seed below three to win a Sun Belt title.

The loss closed out the Chanticleers season with an overall record of 11-8-1 while the Jaguars improve to 14-5-1 and advance to the NCAA tournament. Coastal has reached the Sun Belt championship match in each of its first two years in the league.

Danielle Henley (6:22) got South Alabama on the scoreboard with a header past the Chanticleer defense. Kory Dixon started the play with a crossing pass from the right wing that allowed Henley to head the shot to the far post for the 1-nil lead.

In the 12th minute Dixon got a goal when she knocked a shot that rebounded off the Chanticleer goalkeeper and increased the Jaguar lead to 2-0. Chelsea Followwell was credited with the assist.

Dixon picked up her fourth point of the first half after sending a ball through to Sun Belt Player of the Year Rio Hardy, in the 19th minute, for the third goal.

Even though Coastal controlled possession of the ball for a good portion of the first half, South Alabama out-shot the Chants 9-to-4 overall and was even with three in corner kicks. Daniella Famili, Mackenzie Gibbs, Kendall Parks and Lauren Dabner all got shots off for Coastal.

CCU continued to control the possession into the second half, but it was the Jaguars that got all the scoring by adding two more for the final tally of 5-nil.

The Chanticleer offense was led by Gibbs with four shots while Famili added three.

The match marked the end for two Chanticleer seniors – Famili and Brenna Leftwich.
