Lady Chants have win streak halted in split with Campbell

The Coastal Carolina softball team split a Big South Conference doubleheader with Campbell on Friday, posting a 4-0 victory in the opener before falling to the Camels 2-1 in the second game at Carolina Forest High School.

The loss in the nightcap snapped a five-game winning streak for the Chants, who are now 17-12 overall and 4-1 in the Big South. Campbell is now 18-10 on the season and also 4-1 in the conference.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Saturday with a single game. First-pitch has been moved up to 11 a.m. due to rain being in the forecast.

In Friday’s first game, Kiana Quolas (9-5) recorded her second straight shutout and sixth of the year, while limiting a strong Campbell lineup to just two hits. She allowed only an infield single in the fourth inning and a leadoff base hit in the seventh. She secured the win by assisting on a lineout double play off the bat of Camels’ first baseman Raven Lee.

Coastal scored the only run Quolas needed in the second inning. Jazmin Daigle reached on an error and moved to second when Campbell was called for catcher interference. A sacrifice bunt by Morgan Noad moved Daigle to third and she scored on an RBI groundout by Paige Goldsack.

The Chants had good opportunities to put more on the board in the third and fourth innings, but stranded the bases loaded in each frame. Coastal ended the game with 11 runners left on base, but were able to finally add to their lead in the sixth.

Goldsack led off with a single to left and Jessie Winans walked. After a forceout at third base, Quolas singled to load the bases and Winans scored when Hayden hit a grounder to short for a forceout at second. Cacia Pierre then drew a walk and a wild pitch by Campbell reliever Julia Callicutt allowed Bri Chiusano to come home and make it 3-0.  Pinchrunner Nicole Saggiomo scored the final run on an error.

The Chanticleers totaled eight hits in the game, with Quolas and Goldsack each contributing two. Daigle added her fourth double in four games this week.

The Camels managed just three hits off of Ashley Bagwell in the second game, but got two of them in the first inning, along with a walk and a sacrifice fly to score their only two runs of the day.

Bagwell allowed just one more baserunner over the final six innings and finished with eight strikeouts and the one walk.

Cacia Pierre provided the lone run for Coastal against Campbell right-hander Courtney Roberts with a home run to right-center in the fourth inning, her third of the season.

The Chants threatened in both the fifth and seventh, but were unable to get the tying run. In the final inning, Daigle drew a leadoff walk and Goldsack moved her into scoring position on a two-out single. However, Roberts got her fifth strikeout to end the game. Brooke Donovan had the other two hits for CCU.
