Lady Chants hold onto lead at Palmetto Intercollegiate

ccuwgolf-hansenWith a trio of Chanticleers inside the top-five on the individual leaderboard, the Coastal Carolina women’s golf team increased its team lead to 12 strokes after 36 holes of play at the College of Charleston-hosted Palmetto Intercollegiate, contested at the par-72, 5,972-yard Kiawah Island Resort – Turtle Point course.

Coastal has a two-round total of 572 after backing up its program record 282 during the first round with a 290 during Monday’s second trip around the course. The Chants lead No. 25 GRU Augusta (288-596=584) by 12 strokes and No. 30 Furman (285-305=590) by 18 strokes with one round to play. No. 39 Kansas (288-303=591) and No. 42 Kansas State (298-301=599) round out the top five in the 20-team tournament.

Coastal is co-led by junior Lena Schaeffner and freshman Malene Krolboll Hansen, both of whom are tied for second overall with matching 141 36-hole scores. Schaeffner, who tied her career-best round with a 68 on Sunday, shot a 1-over 73 on Monday. Hansen, who set her collegiate-best with a 70 during round one, shot a 1-under 71 during round two. Schaeffner and Hansen both concluded their second rounds with four birdies. The duo is tied for the top in the tournament field in par-4 scoring, playing the holes at a combined 3-under

Also in the top-five of the 104-competitor field is senior Emee Herbert. The Johns Creek, Ga., native posted a 1-over 73 Monday to mark a 36-hole total at 144 and move two spots up the individual leaderboard into a tie for fifth. Herbert turned in three birdies during her round, including two on back-nine par-4s.

Marissa Hinchman is tied for 23rd overall with a two-round score of 149 (73-76). Hinchman posted a single birdie and 12 pars for her second-round 76.

Bailey Cocca rebounded from her opening round 80 to shoot a 1-over 73 and move 31 slots up the individual leaderboard into a tie for 46th overall. She is 9-over on the tournament with a 153 score. Cocca’s day featured three birdie putts and 13 pars.

The Chanticleers concluded the tournament with a final 18 holes of play on Tuesday, starting at 8:45 a.m.
