Lady Chants ink two recruits during early signing period

Coastal Carolina women’s basketball head coach Alan LeForce announced the signing of Olivia Carlton (Granger, Ind.) and Karsen Sims (Gatlinburg, Tenn.) to National Letter of Intents to continue both their academic and athletic careers at Coastal Carolina come Fall 2013.

“Olivia and Karsen will add much needed depth to our backcourt,” said LeForce. “They both possess great shooting ability and a high basketball IQ from the quality coaching they have received at the high school level. Both Olivia and Karsen are great students and are a great fit with our current roster.”

Carlton, a 5-foot-8 guard, has led the Penn High School Kingsmen to a 64-7 record in her three years. As a freshman she helped the school to a Northern Indiana Conference championship and followed that with a state runner-up finish as a sophomore and final four appearance during her junior season. Carlton was recognized by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association as a top 100 player following her sophomore and junior seasons. She earned honorable mention all-state as a junior. She was also tabbed a top 15 junior prospect by Indiana Basketball Magazine and was named an Indiana Elite North/South All-Star. Carlton has also excelled in the classroom, sporting a 4.0 GPA while also being a member of the National Honor Society.

Sims, a 5-foot-7 guard, has built a strong athletic career at Gatlinburg-Pittman High School. Sims is a three-sport athlete who excels in each of her fields of competition. Through her junior season she has scored 934 points and grabbed 511 rebounds for the Highlanders. She is a three-time All-District 3 and All-County Mountain Press selection on the hardwood, while also being ranked as one of the top 10 female basketball players to watch by the Knoxville News Sentinel. She also garnered All-District 3 Tournament honors for her efforts as a sophomore and junior.

Sims earned numerous accolades on the soccer field and set the Gatlinburg-Pittman school record of 34 goals in a season as a junior. She also set school records as a member of the track team, including a 5-0 mark in the high jump, a distance of 32-2.5 in the triple jump and a 2,529 point total in the pentathlon. She also became the first female to play football at Gatlinburg-Pittman High School and scored the first points on the gridiron by a female in the history of Sevier County high school football.
