Lady Chants record seven goals in blowout of G-W

The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team struck for three goals in the first 24 minutes and then tacked on four more in the second half on its way to a 7-0 rout of Gardner-Webb Wednesday night at CCU Soccer Field.

The seven goals scored were the most for the Chanticleer women since they netted seven against Birmingham Southern in 2005. It was also Coastal’s largest margin of victory in a game since they beat South Carolina State 11-0 in 2003.

The Chants’ second straight victory moves them to 5-5-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the Big South Conference. Gardner-Webb fell to 2-8-1 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Brianna Panico tallied two more goals to lead the way, giving the freshman four in the last two games. Fia Jonsson, Ellie Taylor, Miki Antzoulatos, Taylor Valentine and Morgan Smith each scored one goal, while Kacey Kelley dished out two assists and Smith added one.

“Our kids have been working hard,” Chants’ head coach Paul Hogan said. “The last piece of the puzzle has not been great with our execution in the final third and tonight it was. It’s good to get Kacey back going. She had a great assist and Brianna with two goals again so she’s scoring. But the effort overall was just fantastic. We can take a lot from this.”

Jonsson got the offensive fireworks going in the ninth minute, taking a lead pass by Kelley from the middle and finishing a 15-yard shot from the left side across the box into the wide-open right corner.

Taylor and Panico then scored less than two minutes apart to break the game open early. Kelley set up the second goal as well, sending a header forward into the box where Taylor was there to chip it over the slightly drawn-out Gardner-Webb goalkeeper for her first career goal.

Panico then blasted a 30-yard shot from the right side into the top left corner in the 24th minute to make it 3-0 and added her fifth goal of the season less than five minutes into the second half. She tracked down a ball from Jonsson up the right side, cut to her right and then back toward the middle to shake a defender, and put in a high shot from just inside the box.

Coastal continued its relentless attack through the remainder of the game and capped off the night with three more goals in the final eight minutes. Antzoulatos put home a rebound right in front off of a save following a shot by Smith and less than a minute later Valentine converted a rebound off her own shot that was blocked to the left of the goal.

Smith then closed out the scoring in the 88th minute on a counterattack, putting a low shot from the left corner of the box into the right side. The goals for Antzoulatos and Smith were the first of their careers.

Coastal surpassed 20 shots for the second consecutive game, recording 21 against the Bulldogs and putting 14 of them on goal.

Defensively, the Chanticleers recorded their sixth shutout of the season and limited to Gardner-Webb to seven shots – just two on goal. Coastal also had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Megan Spencer and Faith Farley again split the shutout with Spencer playing into the 69th minute and notching two saves.

The Chants return to action Saturday when they travel to defending regular-season champion High Point for a 5 p.m. kickoff. The Chanticleer men’s team will also take on the Panthers in the second game of the doubleheader at 7:30 p.m.
