Lady Chants’ season ends with loss to Lady Lancers

ccusoft-high5The Coastal Carolina softball team had their season end in the semifinals of the Big South Conference Tournament with a 10-2 loss versus top seed Longwood Saturday morning.

The Chanticleers finished the season 37-22 overall, their fifth straight 30-plus win campaign and their seventh consecutive appearance in the conference tournament semifinals. Longwood (37-18) advanced to face the winner of Campbell versus Radford in Saturday’s winner-take-all championship game.

The Big South Player of the Year Morgan Noad (1-for-3) recorded an RBI single for the Chants as she concluded her career with a Big South career leading 217 RBI over her four years.

Taty Forbes, the Big South Rookie of the Year, went 2-for-3 at the plate to record her 103rd and 104th hit of the season to set the Big South and CCU single season record. The record previously of 103 was held by Coastal Carolina’s Sara Graziano in 1994.

In the top of the first, leadoff hitter Bri Chiusano was walked. Forbes then hit a single – tying the Big South and CCU single season hits record of 103. Mackenzie Conrad drew a walk to load the bases for CCU. Longwood’s Elizabeth McCarthy induced a fly out and a double play to dig her way out of the jam.

Longwood raced out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Krista Kelly and Carly Adams each hit a single followed by Emily Murphy who delivered a RBI single to score Kelly (1-0). Kaylynn Batten reached on a fielder’s choice as Adams was thrown out at home on the play. Longwood added three more runs on a bases loaded walk then hit back-to-back RBI singles to give the Lancers for a 4-0 lead. Adding to the lead, Kelsey Sweeney and Justina Augustine each hit an RBI single, sending runners to the plate to make the score 6-0.

Glenn Walters gave the Lancers an 8-0 lead in the second with  a two-run double.

In the top of the third, Coastal got on the scoreboard. Chiusano delivered a double down the left field line. Then, Forbes grounded out but moved Chiusano to third. Noad pushed a RBI single down the right field line to score Chiusano to make the score 8-1.

Jessica Smith hit a solo home run to give the Lancers a 9-1 cushion in the bottom of the third. After, a bases loaded walk sent another run to the plate for a 10 run advantage.

In the top of the fifth, Chiusano and Forbes hit back to back singles with one out. Conrad then smacked an RBI single to send Chiusano home to make the score 10-2, which eventually proved to be the final score.

Dominik suffered the loss and finished the season with a 19-12 record. The senior pitcher finished her career with a 33-20 record with 220 strikeouts.

In their four seasons, Noad and Chiusano combined to lead Coastal to 148 total victories, including a 73-22 regular-season Big South record. Dominik, Conrad and Cassidy Brzozowski also concluded their careers at Coastal.
