Lady Chants’ shot at buzzer ruled too late in home loss

ccuwhoops-henrydriveAngelica Henry drained a 3-pointer as the buzzer expired and appeared to send Coastal Carolina to a thrilling victory over Campbell. However, after official review, it was ruled that the ball left Henry hand too late, allowing the Fighting Camels to escape Conway with an 82-81 victory.

Coastal led Campbell 71-70 with 3:47 to play in regulation before Campbell took its first lead since the 7:52 mark of the first half on a D Janelle Brown layup. The teams then traded six lead changes and three ties over the ensuing 2:14 before a Henry layup knotted the game for the ninth time at 79-all with 1:09 showing on The HTC Center scoreboard.

Campbell’s RaeChaun Edwards scored on a layup on the Fighting Camels next possession, pushing the visitors ahead 81-79. Coastal’s AJ Jordan followed with a bucket on a putback with 25 second to play. Campbell then played for the final shot of the contest, opting to leave the ball in senior Kiera Gaines’ hands. Gaines let the clock wind down to eight seconds before moving off a screen on the left side of the court and down the lane. However, before Gaines was able to get a shot up, she was fouled with 3.6 seconds left to play. She split the pair of free throws, making the first, to give the Camels an 82-81 advantage.

Coastal inbounded the ball after the free throw to Henry near the top of the key. The senior raced down the floor to the right wing where she shook off Gaines and swished what appeared to be the game-winning 3-pointer. The officials then conferred and used replay to reverse the ruling of a made field goal, leaving the Fighting Camels with the 82-81 win.

Jordan led the Chanticleers (11-14, 7-9 Big South) with 29 points, while Henry added 19, including six of Coastal’s final eight points. Karsen Sims, who returned to the CCU lineup after missing the previous three games with an injury, added 12 markers for the Chants and Alexx Puckett chipped in 10.

In addition to Henry’s scoring performance, the senior also tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 10 assists. She now has 292 helpers in her career, moving her into sixth on the CCU all-time list.

Campbell (15-9, 10-5 Big South) was led by Roslyn Presley’s 29 points on 12-of-23 from the floor. She was joined in double-figures by Ashley James (14), Brown (13), Edwards (13) and Gaines (11).

The teams put their shooting prowess on display throughout the contest as Campbell finished 32-of-64 (50.0%) from the floor, while Coastal was just behind making 31-of-64 attempts (48.4%). Both sides made 7-of-16 3-pointers. Coastal also went a perfect 12-of-12 from the free-throw line, while the Camels finished 11-of-17 from the charity stripe.

Coastal Carolina returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 20, hosting Charleston Southern.
