Lady Chants take first loss in double-elimination tourney

Charleston Southern scored first against Coastal Carolina and didn’t look back to take game seven of the 2012 Big South Softball Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting and Brookwood Farms Barbeque by a 5-2 score on Friday morning at Radford Softball Field in Radford, Va.

Charleston Southern improves to 32-25 on the year, while Coastal Carolina moves to 39-18 on the season.

Coastal threatened to score in the second inning after the first two batters were walked and then Jazmin Daigle hit a sacrifice bunt that moved Tamara Hawkins to third and Chelsea Pineda to second base. Charleston Southern struck out the next two batters to move the game to the third inning.

In the top of the third inning the Buccaneers got on the board when Megan Lombard hit a home run to left center that scored Melissa Adams to make it a 2-0 game.

The Chanticleers had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the third when Sarah Maples reached first on a single to center field, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Maples then reached third during Brooke Donovan’s at bat. Charleston Southern picked up the third out during the Chanticleers next at bat.

During the bottom of the fifth inning the Chanticleers loaded the bases, as Maples hit a single down the left field line. Donovan then hit a single to center field during Coastal’s next at bat. Kory Hayden was walked for the second time following Donovan’s at bat. Kiana made contact with the ball in Coastal’s next at bat, but grounded out to the pitcher.

Jana Matthews recorded the second home run of the game in the sixth inning, knocking the ball out of center field to give the Buccaneers a 3-0 lead.

The Chanticleers loaded the bases again in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Jessie Winans reached base on balls, which moved Daigle to second and Nicole Saggiomo to third. Charleston Southern held Coastal scoreless through six by picking up the third out during the Chants next at bat.

Charleston Southern built up a 5-0 lead in the top of the seventh after Kristin Kelleher hit the Buccaneers third home run of the game that drove in Lombard .

Kiana Quolas answered in the bottom of the inning for the Chanticleers by hitting a two run homer to make it a 5-2 game. The home run was the fourth of the season for Quolas. Pineda reached first with two outs after being walked for the second time in the game. Daigle tried to keep the game going, but popped up to the fourth baseman for the final out.

Pierre ended the game with two hits in three at bats, while being walked once. Hayden had one hit and one run in two at bats and was walked twice. Quolas posted one hit, two RBI and one run in four at bats. Sara Rasley had a team high eight putouts, while Winans led the team with three assists.

Quolas pitched a complete game striking out seven, walking two and giving up eight hits in 31 batters faced.

Lombard had two hits, two runs and two RBI in four at bats for Charleston Southern. Matthews finished with one hit, one run and one RBI in three at bats. Adams had one hit and one run in two at bats. Linzy Rother tallied seven putouts for the Buccaneers and Stephanie Sbardell had three assists.

Morgan Dowdy posted her 19th win of the season after pitching 6.1 innings in which she struck out four, walked six and gave up seven hits.

Coastal returns to action against Campbell at 2 p.m. on Friday.
