Lady Chants win Big South opener on another late goal

Tyler Herb was dominant in game one for Coastal Carolina to lead his team to a 6-1 win and the Chanticleers forced extra innings in game two, but a 10-inning error gave VMI a 10-9 victory Saturday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium.

Coastal Carolina, who wins the weekend series, is 15-12 overall and 4-2 in the Big South Conference. VMI, who snapped an 18-game losing streak with the game two win Saturday, is 13-17, 4-5.

Tyler Herb struck out a career-high 10 and walked none over eight innings, while all nine Chanticleers starters had at least one hit in Coastal Carolina’s 6-1 win in the first game.

In game two, VMI scored seven in the second and Coastal scored seven in the eighth to eventually force extra innings. In the 10th, Rob Dickinson drew a one-out walk and Matt Winn was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Nick Dwyer hit a fly ball to left field for the potential third out, but a dropped ball allowed Dickinson to score from second base for the game winner.

Coastal took control out of the gate in game one as Ted Blackman singled to lead off, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third. Colin Hering reached on an error, driving in Blackman and allowing Hering to take second base. Will Remillard hit the first pitch he saw to left field for a single to put runners on the corners. Jake Kane plated Hering with a sacrifice fly to right-center field.

Herb (4-1) then set the stage for his career outing by striking out the side in the bottom of the first. Overall, he had five three-up, three-down innings, allowed four hits and one unearned run.

The Chants added two more in the second inning. Luke Willis drew a leadoff walk and Connor Owings laid down a bunt single. After a sacrifice bunt, Nick Oberg brought home Willis with an RBI ground out, putting Owings on third. After a Blackman walk put runners on the corners, Jacob May hit an RBI single through the left side of the infield.

Coastal extended its lead with two runs in the sixth. The Chants loaded the bases with no outs as Willis singled and Owings and Zach Remillard each reached on bunt singles. Oberg drove in Willis with an RBI groundout and Blackman followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Owings.

VMI took advantage of a Coastal error to end the shutout bid in the seventh inning. Winn hit a leadoff double, took third on a one-out ground out and scored when Dwyer reached on an error. After Winn’s double, Herb struck out his ninth batter of the game to set a career high then struck out Thomas Stallings to end the seventh for his 10th K of the game.
