NMB takes region tourney; Conway rolls on Senior Night

The North Myrtle Beach volleyball team finished the Region 7-3A tournament Tuesday the same way it handled the regular season in the region – undefeated and as the champions.

The Lady Chiefs (25-1, 10-0) completed its sweep through the region tournament with a 3-0 victory over St. James, which advanced to the finals by defeating rival and host Socastee 2-1 in the semifinals.

North Myrtle Beach also made it a clean sweep in the semis, knocking off No. 4-seeded Myrtle Beach 2-0 with wins of 25-11, 25-8 over its rival. Taylor Allman, who was named the tournament’s MVP, had nine kills and one block and Marci Chestnut had six kills and four blocks for the Lady Chiefs.

North Myrtle Beach then defeated St. James in the championship match 25-9, 25-10, 25-16. Allman had 14 kills and one block, and all-tourney team member Ellen Johnson had nine kills and 22 service points. Chestnut had eight kills and two blocks, Sarah McCloskey had two kills and four blocks, Tara Hix had 21 assists and Moriah Jones had 26 digs.

No. 3-seeded St. James defeated No. 2-seeded Socastee 25-15 in the opener, fell 25-19 in the second, then scored a 25-17 win in the deciding set to reach the finals.

The all-tournament team featured Collenn Korowicki (Wilson), Courtney Peters (Georgetown), Shelby Sheets (Myrtle Beach), Katherine Hall (Socastee), Alexis Gunnell and Hayley Settle (St James).

The state playoffs begin next week with Noerth Myrtle Beach and Socastee hosting first-round games against Region 6-3A foes and St. James and Myrtle Beach hitting the road to face the top two teams from the same region.

* Conway 3, Sumter 0: The Lady Tigers bid farewell to their seniors in winning fashion Tuesday night, sweeping visiting Sumter with wins of 25-11, 25-12, 25-14.

On Senior Night, the Lady Tigers (10-4 overall, 6-1 Region 6-4A) were led by a trio of seniors. Ryley Hughes led Conway with 23 assists and nine aces on 16 service points, Bridgette Harper has seven kills, and Vicky Evens chipped in five digs and nine service points.

“Our seniors really played well tonight. I am extremely proud of the focus and leadership that they have shown all year,” said Conway coach Tricia Junga.  “Ryley, Bridgette and Vicky have been a big part of rebuilding the program the last couple of years. Their hard work and dedication have yielded great results.”

Junior Madison Gore also had a big game, adding seven kills and five aces on 15 service points as the Lady Tigers turn their attention to Thursday’s showdown at Carolina Forest with the region title on the line.
