Tennis: Saints, Seahawks, Braves win playoff debuts

The Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach girls tennis team waltzed through the first round of the SCISA Class 2A playoffs Wednesday with a 6-0 road victory over Hilton Head Prep.

Following the long road trip, the second-seeded Lady Saints (7-3) swept the top-seeded Lady Dolphins despite being involved in several close singles matches.

CAMB’s No. 1 Tatiana Harrelson made quick work of Hilton Head counterpart Lauren Harvey 6-0, 6-2 to remain undefeated on the season, but the rest were relatively tight.

No. 2 Chloe Parker won 7-5, 6-3, No. 3 Ava McCauley rolled 6-2, 6-3, No. 4 Carolina Stokes took a 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 tiebreaker, No. 5 Carly Belle Jackson won 7-5, 6-4, and No. 6 Brae Jackson prevailed 6-4, 6-3.

The singles sweep avoided a need for doubles play for the Lady Saints, who advance to the state semifinal round in Sumter on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

* Myrtle Beach 5, Colleton County 1: The top-seeded Lady Seahawks opened their quest for a 16th state championship by defeating fourth-seeded Colleton County in Wednesday’s Class 4A playoff opener at the Myrtle Beach Tennis Center.

Myrtle Beach’s No. 1 singles player Bailey Deskins, No. 2 Paxton Gentry, No. 3 Carrington Callihan, and No. 5 Jalah Horton won their matches in straight sets, as did the No. 2 doubles team of Cassidy Friend and Carly Starnes. The closest match of the day was the lone loss at No. 4 singles as Colleton County’s Daryn Hasker edged Janell Horton 6-4, 7-5.

* Socastee 6, Stratford 0: The top-seeded Lady Braves swept into the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. Socastee hosts a second-round match on Monday.
