Hoops: Seahawks, Braves sweep their 2017 openers

mbghoops-21dribThe Myrtle Beach High girls basketball team snapped a rare two-game losing streak Tuesday night with a convincing 70-27 victory over visiting Georgetown.

Coming off a fourth-place finish in the CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational that saw them suffer their first two defeats of the season, the Lady Seahawks (9-2) bounced back with a vengence.

Kiana Adderton scored a game-high 18 points and Nia Sumpter added 12 as the senior duo dominated the Lady Bulldogs in the pain. Ivy Collins and Tatyanna Hollins tallied nine points apiece.

Myrtle Beach opens the title defense of their Region 7-4A title on Saturday at Wilson.

* Socastee 65, Waccamaw 28: The Lady Braves kicked off the new year in style Tuesday by blowing out the Lady Warriors.

Socastee faces North Myrtle Beach on Wednesday in their final non-region tuneup before facing 6-5A rival Conway on Friday.

BOYS

* Myrtle Beach 60, Georgetown 26: The Seahawks rolled past the visiting Bulldogs to close out the non-region portion of their schedule.

Robert Swanson and Kylvis Vereen led a balanced offensive effort with 16 and 12 points apiece as 10 Seahawks different scored. Emory Knox added eight points as Myrtle Beach emptied the bench in the second half.

Myrtle Beach travel to Wilson on Saturday to open Region 7-4A play.

* Socastee 64, Waccamaw 53: The Braves used a 17-0 run in the first quarter to pull away from the Warriors.

* Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach 96, Kings Academy 64: The Saints (7-9) used a sizzling start to 2017 to roll to a road victory over Kings Academy.

Justin Busby scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Bryce Schneider tallied 24 points and seven boards to lead the Saints. Michael Green added 11 points and dished out seven assists.
