Live Orange Bowl Updates

Grand Strand Sports Report is live from the Pressbox at the Orange Bowl in Miami. Join us as we offer this running commentary and report for those that can’t experience the game for whatever reason.

Weather: As the cold air filters in back in Myrtle Beach, Miami sits at 60 degrees for a kickoff at 8pm and a high today of 67. It feels perfect. Just a slight tinge of cool.

The Stadium: The Orange Bowl is held in the Sun Life Stadium, also home to the Miami Dolphins, and 2013 BCS Championship game. This stadium feels huge.

Pregame:  Fans are beginning to file into the stadium. West Virginia’s band performed on field, followed by Clemson’s band. Both receive loud ovations. Teams have retreated to the locker rooms  to await introductions. Danny Ford has just been recognized on the field.

Clemson and West Virginia both open the game with short series’. In the case of the Tigers, it was a quick 3 and out. No score in the first.

Clemson scores off a long touchdown run. Clemson leads 7-0. West Virginia has the ball and is on the march. within Clemson’s 20 now.

West Virginia marches down the field and puts up their own 7 points after a run up the middle from the 4 yard line. Tie ballgame 7-7 with 6:54 left in the 1st.

Sammy Watkins walks one in the end zone on a 27 yard reception. Tigers lead 14-7 with 4:38 left in the half.

This one is moving quick. West Virginia moves the ball quickly into Clemson territory, as my friend Emerson Phillips, sitting beside me, said “1st one to 40 is going to win”

Mountaineers score again. It’s a barn burner. 14-14 now with 2:49 left in the 1st. Woooo….

Highest scoring 1st quarter in the history of the Orange Bowl. 32 points beats the old mark of 26 in 1942.

Clemson adds 3 more with a 43 yard field goal….45 seconds left in the 1st. Can WVU score again before the end of the 1st? It’s possible.

As has been the case with most Bowl Games this postseason. Their are a lot of empty seats in the Sun Life Stadium.

2nd Quarter: West Virginia scores on a run from outside the 25. Clemson has just traded a field goal for a touchdown. It’s 21 to 17, WVU lead.

WVU returns a fumble 100 yards to score, leading 28-17 now in the 2nd.

Clemson trades another Field Goal for a score…WVU leads 28-20 after the 43 yard field goal.

That does it…Highest scoring half in the history of the Orange Bowl. West Virginia scores to lead 35-20 for a total of 55. The previous high was 48 points in 2005 when USC played Oklahoma.

Really…this is crazy WVU scores again. It’s still the 1st half. 42-20 now with 1:13 left in the half. 62 total points now is the most in BCS bowl history.

“WVU is on Fire!” as my friend Keitt just said. They are leading 49-20 at the half! My buddy Wayne White commented that “this bowl game is like watching two kids on Playstation or Xbox, ridiculous.”

Halftime show: Train. That’s a nice touch.

2nd Half: The Mountaineers start the 2nd half the same way they ended the first…with a touchdown. 56-20 lead.

You could officially call this one ugly! The Clemson fans have begun their mass exodus. Miami is a long way to drive to leave halfway through the 3rd quarter. Oh, did I mention that WVU scored again. Easy pass up the middle and a waltz into the end zone. 63-20 WVU lead 9:18 left in the 3rd.

Clemson puts another 7 on the board at the 1:37 mark of the 3rd quarter. 63-26 now.

End of the 3rd Quarter: WVU leads Clemson 63-26.  Even the WVU fans are now leaving.

WVU breaks the record for most points by one team in a BCS bowl game 70 points now with time left in the 4th. 70-26 WVU lead.

Clemson adds 7 more off a 4 yard run as the 4th quarter is headed into it’s final moments. WVU 70, CCU 33. Football, not basketball.

Final. 70-33 WVU wins.
