Local runners make strides at state cross country meet

Missing a month of the high school cross country season seemed to be a setback for local runners, but several turned in solid efforts at the season’s finish line at the SCHSL state championships on Saturday at the Sandhills Research Center in Columbia.

The Carolina Forest boys placed 15th out of 20 teams with a total of 353 points. Michael Mohr (16:55) led the way for the Panthers with a 48th-place showing, followed by fellow seniors Jonathan Penter (17:06), Jacob Dulson (17:24) and Austin Smith (17:36). Junior Cullen Dore (18:04) rounding out Carolina Forest’s top five runners.

Conway senior Monroe Thompkins (17:04) was the top local unattached runner in Class 5A boys with a 58th-place showing senior. St. James senior Jayson Brady (17:13) placed 69th.

In Class 4A boys, Myrtle Beach (503) finished 18th, led by junior Tyler Flannelly (18:13) in 77th place. Teammates Jake DeSalvo (19:09) placed 107th, Curt Caudle (19:16), Hayden Ford (19:23) and Chancellor Fincher (20:16) rounded out the Seahawks’ scoring.

North Myrtle Beach sophomore Alexander D’Annunzio (18:13) placed 84th individually, and senior teammate Jensen Button (18:57) finished 102nd.

In Class 4A girls, North Myrtle Beach (388) finished 17th, led by eighth-grader Isabella Spickler (21:30) with a 52nd-place finish and senior Havana Charles (22:01) in 69th place. Teammates Kaylin Regan (23:09), Taylor Monahan (23:14) and Kayah Marques (23:16) rounded out the top-five runners for the Lady Chiefs.

A pair of Lady Seahawks turned in strong individual performances – senior Samantha Murillo (21:53) in 64th and sophomore Riley Massey (22:09) in 76th.

In Class 5A girls, Carolina Forest sophomore Brianna Hatfield (21:09) finished 87th. St. James sophomore Taylor Marotta (21:58) placed 111th.
